For a newcomer, this all can become pretty overwhelming as you have so much options to chose from and wrong choices can make things go bad really fast.īut Firaxis Games made an incredibly replayable game, where you’re encouraged to learn from your mistakes and do better the next time. Especially the Avatar project will put you in a constant race against time, because the completion of this project automatically results in a game loss. There’s quite a bit of micromanagement here, and the constant time pressure will force you to make some hard choices (even during missions there will often be some kind of turn limit). In the Avenger you will be managing your soldiers, research new technologies and learn more about the aliens, manage your resources and expand your base. The stakes get raised however, once you learn about the Avatar project, which will turn out to be the clue to make people revolt against the aliens and hopefully defeat them. You use the Avenger, a crashed alien ship that serves as a mobile base, to scavenge various locations, visit black markets and make contact with other resistance groups. The main part of the game sees your team raiding various ADVENT outposts, supply transports and other guerilla-type missions. But not everyone’s happy with the occupation and XCOM, now reduced to a resistance group, continues to take up arms and after freeing their commander from cryostasis they reach out to other resistance groups around the world to fight back. The continuous propaganda machine and the puppet ADVENT Administration makes it seem like they have the best intentions.

XCOM 2 continues the story of the 2012 reboot, but advances it 20 years into the future where humanity has surrendered to the aliens. Luckily for them, they didn’t have to wait too long. The console audience got a taste of XCOM’s delicious gameplay in 2012, so many were hoping that XCOM 2 would eventually also grace the current generation consoles.

XCOM 2 launched as a PC exclusive earlier this year and became a runaway hit as one of the best strategy games in recent years.
